The First Alert GCO1CN is a combination alarm designed to detect dangerous levels of explosive gases (methane and propane) and carbon monoxide (CO). It features a plug-in design with a 9-volt battery backup for continued operation during power outages.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. Explosive gases like methane and propane are also highly dangerous. This alarm is designed to provide early warning of their presence. In the event of an alarm, immediately move to fresh air and contact emergency services (e.g., 911 or your gas provider).

The GCO1CN alarm operates by plugging directly into a standard AC wall outlet. Ensure the outlet is not controlled by a switch. A 9-volt battery (included) provides backup power in case of an electrical outage. Install the battery before plugging the unit into the wall.

For optimal protection, install at least one carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home and in every bedroom. Explosive gases are typically lighter than air (methane) or heavier than air (propane), so placement should consider the type of gas being monitored. For general safety, place the alarm at least 5 feet from fuel-burning appliances to avoid nuisance alarms.

The backlit digital display shows the current level of carbon monoxide or explosive gas detected. It can also show peak levels recorded since the last reset. Refer to the display for immediate readings and historical data.

The 9-volt backup battery should be replaced at least once a year, or immediately when the low battery signal sounds. Use only the specified replacement battery type.

Alarms do not last indefinitely. This unit has a service life of approximately 5-10 years. Replace the entire alarm unit according to the manufacturer's recommended replacement date, typically found on the back of the unit.
