Installation of the rear derailleur requires specific tools and mechanical knowledge. If you are unsure about any step, it is recommended to seek assistance from a qualified bicycle mechanic.

3.1 Mounting the Derailleur

The RD-M310 Altus SGS is a direct mount type derailleur. Ensure your bicycle frame has a compatible derailleur hanger.

  1. Attach the derailleur to the derailleur hanger on your bicycle frame using the mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt securely to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications.
  2. Route the shift cable from the shifter through the cable housing and attach it to the derailleur's cable fixing bolt. Ensure the cable is properly seated in all guides.

3.2 Limit Screw Adjustment

Limit screws prevent the derailleur from shifting the chain off the smallest or largest cogs.

  • H (High) Limit Screw: Adjust this screw so that the upper guide pulley is directly aligned with the smallest cog when the chain is on the smallest cog.
  • L (Low) Limit Screw: Adjust this screw so that the upper guide pulley is directly aligned with the largest cog when the chain is on the largest cog.

3.3 B-Tension Screw Adjustment

The B-tension screw adjusts the distance between the upper guide pulley and the cogs.

  • Shift the chain to the largest cog on the cassette and the smallest chainring on the crankset.
  • Adjust the B-tension screw so that the upper guide pulley clears the largest cog by approximately 5-6 mm. This ensures smooth shifting and prevents the pulley from rubbing against the cogs.

3.4 Cable Tension Adjustment

Fine-tune shifting performance using the barrel adjuster.

  • Shift the chain to the smallest cog.
  • Shift one click towards a larger cog. If the chain does not move, turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise in small increments until it shifts smoothly.
  • If the chain overshifts or makes noise, turn the barrel adjuster clockwise in small increments.
