Introduction

The Zorki-1 is a Soviet-era rangefinder camera, produced by the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant (KMZ) between 1948 and 1956. This manual provides essential information for the operation and maintenance of your Zorki-1 camera, specifically models manufactured approximately between 1949 and 1950. It is designed for use with 35mm film and features an M39×1 threaded lens connection.

The Zorki-1 uses an M39×1 threaded lens connection. To attach the lens, align the threads of the lens with the camera body's lens mount. Gently screw the lens clockwise until it is securely fastened. Do not overtighten.

2. Loading 35mm Film

1. Ensure the camera is in a dimly lit area or under a changing bag to prevent film exposure.
2. Remove the bottom plate of the camera by rotating the locking key (if present) or unscrewing the retaining knobs.

3. Insert the 35mm film cassette into the left chamber of the camera.
4. Pull out the film leader and insert it into the take-up spool on the right side. Ensure the film perforations engage with the sprockets.
5. Advance the film by turning the film advance knob a few times to ensure it is properly spooled.
6. Replace the bottom plate and secure it.
7. Advance the film two frames (dry shots) to bring fresh film into position for the first exposure.

3. Attaching the Shutter Release Cable

If using an external shutter release cable, screw its threaded end into the shutter release button on the camera's top plate. This allows for smoother shutter release, reducing camera shake, especially during longer exposures.

2. Setting Aperture (f-stop)

A smaller f-number (e.g., f/3.5) indicates a wider aperture and shallower depth of field, while a larger f-number (e.g., f/16) indicates a narrower aperture and greater depth of field.

3. Focusing with the Rangefinder

The Zorki-1 is a rangefinder camera. To focus:

1. Look through the rangefinder eyepiece (the smaller window next to the viewтапкыч).
2. You will see two images, one superimposed over the other.
3. Rotate the focusing ring on the lens until the two images in the rangefinder patch merge into a single, clear image. At this point, your subject is in focus.

4. Taking a Photograph

1. Wind the film advance knob clockwise until it stops. This also cocks the shutter.
2. Set your desired shutter speed and aperture.
3. Frame your shot using the main viewтапкыч.
4. Focus on your subject using the rangefinder.
5. Gently press the shutter release button to take the photograph.

5. Rewinding the Film

Once all exposures on the film roll have been made:

1. Locate the film rewind release button (usually on the top plate, near the shutter release). Press and hold this button.
2. Rotate the film rewind knob (on the left side of the top plate) clockwise until you feel the tension release, indicating the film is fully rewound into its cassette.
3. Remove the bottom plate and carefully extract the film cassette.
