If the time is running, first press the START/STOP button to stop the timer. Then press the CLEAR button to reset the display to 0:0000. The CLEAR button typically only operates when the timer is stopped.
For most units, slide the battery cover off in the direction of the arrow on the back. Remove the exhausted batteries and replace them with new button-cell batteries according to the polarity diagram inside the compartment. If the display is faint or erratic, a new battery usually solves the issue.
