Sensors within the ClariMate translate reed and breath control into digital signals. Fingering is detected through the use of the NODE, which is the continuous buzzing sound that is produced by the ClariMate. The ClariMate may need to be recalibrated occasionally to accommodate changes in room and instrument temperature.

Standalone, USB, Bluetooth, and Recovery mode

The ClariMate has three operating modes: Standalone, USB, and Bluetooth.
The Clari Mate enters these modes from a powered-off state, so you will need to turn the ClariMate off before switching modes.

USB
USB mode allows you to connect your ClariMate to the ClariMate app on a Windows or MacOS computer or Android tablet or phone with the included USB cable. This is useful for changing settings, calibrating, or customizing your ClariMate, as well as for using it as a MIDI controller. Firmware updates must be done in USB mode. USB mode is not compatible with iOS or iPad OS.

To turn ClariMate on in USB mode:

1. Hold down the USB button (A)
2. Press and release the power button (C)
3. Continue to hold the USB button until an orange light appears

Bluetooth
Bluetooth mode allows you to connect your ClariMate to the ClariMate app on an iOS, Android, MacOS, or Windows device. This is useful for changing settings, calibrating, or customizing your ClariMate, as well as for using it with play along tracks.
In Bluetooth mode, your ClariMate can act as a receiver for audio, allowing you to stream audio from your device to your ClariMate, so that you can listen to it in your headphones alongside the sound of the ClariMate.
While the ClariMate can receive audio over Bluetooth, it cannot send audio from its embedded synthesizer over Bluetooth. For this reason, it is not possible to use the ClariMate with Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.

To turn ClariMate on in Bluetooth mode:

1. Hold down the Bluetooth button (B)
2. Press and release the power button (C)
3. Continue to hold the Bluetooth button until a blue light appears

Connecting the ClariMate to your Device in Bluetooth Mode When your ClariMate is in Bluetooth mode, you can pair it with your device automatically by clicking or tapping the Bluetooth connection button in the Welcome screen (pictured below) and selecting your ClariMate from the device list.
Special note for Windows: If you are using the Windows version of the app, you will need use the Bluetooth and devices page in the Windows Settings menu to connect for the first time. On your PC, click Start, open Settings, and go to Bluetooth & devices. Turn on Bluetooth if it isn’t already enabled. Click Add device, select Bluetooth, and wait while Windows searches for nearby devices. When your ClariMate appears, select it from the list to connect.
You will only need to connect to the ClariMate this way the first time that you use it. After that, you can use the Bluetooth connection button (pictured above) to connect.

Use Recovery mode to reinstall the firmware in case of serious issues. Even if your ClariMate cannot turn on in any other mode, it should be able to turn on in Recovery mode as long as it has charge left in the battery.

2. Press and release the power button (C)
3. Continue to hold the two buttons until a yellow light appears

The ClariMate can be configured in various ways using the ClariMate app.

It is recommended that you charge the ClariMate for 4 – 8 hours before using it for the first time. The ClariMate is compatible with most AC adapters that use a USB A- C or C – C connection. Avoid USB C chargers that plug directly into a wall socket, such as those used by laptops and game consoles. For safest charging practices, we recommend using the included cable.

After downloading the .dmg file from the ClariMate website, double click on the file to open it, then drag and drop the ClariMate app into the applications folder in the popup window:

Windows
After downloading the .exe file from the ClariMate website, double click on the file to open it. Click “yes” to allow the app to make changes to your device, then follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Android
Download the app from the Google Play store. When you open the app for the first time, the app will ask for permission to run in the background. Select “Allow” for best performance.

When connecting the ClariMate to the application via USB, the app will ask you to grant permission to access and handle the ClariMate. Select the option to “Always open ClariMate App II when ClariMate is connected” before tapping OK. Multiple variations of this message may appear. When prompted, please select the option to always open the app when the device is connected.

When connecting to the app via Bluetooth, the app will ask to use your precise location. This is necessary to connect to nearby Bluetooth devices (like the Clari Mate).

This will allow your calibration files and other settings to be synced between any devices where you have installed the ClariMate app. You can easily create an account by logging in with your Apple or Google account, but you can also create an account using any email address, provided you also create a password. It is highly recommended to do a firmware update before getting started to ensure that you are benefitting from the most recent improvements to the ClariMate. Firmware updates must be done in USB mode using the Windows, MacOS, or Android version of the application. iOS/iPadOS devices cannot be used to update the firmware.
Firmware updates are bundled with the most recent version of the ClariMate application, so please keep your ClariMate app up to date. The most recent version of the ClariMate application can be found on our webсайт, https://clarimate.us (АКШ/Канада) же https://clarimate.eu (Европа).
If a firmware update is available, you will see one of these messages, depending on whether you’ve connected to the app with Bluetooth or USB:

If you’re connected via USB, simply click the “update” button. If you’re connected via Bluetooth, you will need to connect to the app on a Mac or Windows computer, or Android phone using the USB C cable that comes included with the ClariMate. Use an adapter if necessary to connect this cable to your computer or Android phone. iPhones or iPads cannot be used to update the firmware.
If you’ve been using the ClariMate with our previous app, or you bought a ClariMate that doesn’t already have compatible firmware installed, you will see a message that looks like this when you try to connect to the app:

As before, you will need to connect to the app on a Mac or Windows computer, or Android phone using the USB C cable that comes included with the ClariMate, using a USB A to C adapter if necessary. iPhones or iPads cannot be used to update the firmware.
To update the firmware, you will need to turn on the ClariMate in recovery mode. To do this, press and hold the two buttons on the left hand side of the ClariMate. Press and release the power button, and continue to hold the two buttons on the left until a yellow light appears:

At this point the app will prompt you to update the firmware.
If you are using an Android phone to update the firmware, you may be prompted several times to grant permission to the app to interact with the ClariMate device. When prompted, please select the option to always open the app when the device is connected .
If anything goes wrong during the firmware update, simply turn off the ClariMate, close and re-open the app, and then put the ClariMate into recovery mode and try again.

Updating via iOS/iPadOS

Updating via an iPhone or iPad is a special case. To update via iPhone or iPad, your ClariMate must already have a minimum firmware version of 4.2.12. If your ClariMate is not yet running this version of the firmware, you will need to update to 4.2.12 or higher using one of the methods described above before you can make use of the iOS/iPadOS firmware update methods.
To update the firmware with an iPhone or iPad, download the app “ClariMate Updater” from the App Store. Follow the instructions in the app to update the firmware.

You can also switch systems anytime in the Calibration File Manager. See the “Calibration file manager” sub-section in the “ClariMate Application” section for more information.

Adjusting the Clari Mate Airflow and Breath Response 

The ClariMate was designed with flexibility in mind. Clarinetists use a wide range of mouthpiece and reed combinations, resulting in different levels of air resistance that greatly affects the player’s breath control and playing experience. To provide you with something that most resembles your setup, ClariMate comes with three plugs that can be inserted into the breath tube to change the air resistance, as well as a Breath Response parameter that affects the breath sensitivity (see the Breath section in the ClariMate
Application chapter for more information on the Breath Response settings).

Every clarinet is unique; even clarinets with the same make and model will be slightly different. The ClariMate should be able to recognize the notes on most modern clarinets, but the note recognition can often be improved through the note calibration process. If you are experiencing latency or note recognition problems, this can be addressed by using the ClariMate application to “teach” the ClariMate to recognize the notes on your particular instrument. See the Note page section in the Clari Mate Application chapter for more information.

The Active Reeds require calibration in order to function properly. This can be done on the Breath page of the application. Active Reeds should be recalibrated each time they are placed on the mouthpiece. To calibrate, the  Clari Mate needs to measure the open and closed positions of the reed.
Please refer to the instructions provided in the Clari Mate app for more information.
If the Clari Mate does not sense enough movement between the two positions, you will see a “Calibration unsuccessful” message.
Tip: Active Reeds are best calibrated after they have been played for a minute or two. This allows the optical sensor of the ClariMate to compensate for the buildup of condensation on the ClariMate unit and the mirror of the Active Reed.
Tip: If you are using a cane or synthetic reed in place of the Active Reed, be sure to turn off the Active Reed functionality in the app to avoid playing out of tune. See the Breath section of the Clari Mate Application chapter for more information.

Clari Mate Application 

The ClariMate app allows you to change the settings on your ClariMate, adjusting it to your preferences and to your clarinet. It’s available on Windows and MacOS computers, as well as iOS and Android devices. The app can be downloaded from https://clarimate.us (АКШ/Канада) же https://clarimate.eu (Европа).
To operate the ClariMate app, you’ll first need to set up an account. Always log in with that same account on any device you use, or you may encounter file synchronization errors.

7. Shortcut to the transposition parameter. Select a transposition from the drop down menu, or tap the box to go to the Sound page. This setting affects only the ClariMate’s embedded synthesizer – it does not affect MIDI output.
8. Shows the battery status, as well as the current mode of connection (USB/Bluetooth).
9. Plays the tutorial.
10.  Opens a menu with the following functions:

The Note page is where you can calibrate the fingering detection of the ClariMate. The ClariMate determines which fingering you’re using by “listening” to the sound of the NODE (Note Detector). Doing a Note Calibration will enable the ClariMate to respond faster to changes in fingering, allowing you to play faster and more virtuosic ally without latency or delay.
Once you’ve finished calibrating the notes on your ClariMate, you can save your Calibration file. Бул file will be synced between your devices, provided

All of the ClariMate’s additional settings – volume, breath sensitivity, transposition, MIDI settings, etc. are saved as part of the calibration file.

1. Use this to toggle between the two main calibration modes:
   Free (recommended): ClariMate will select a note to calibrate based on your current fingering.
   Sequential: Calibrates each note sequentially. Automatically moves to the next note after calibration. Similar to the previous ClariMate app.
2. Shows the currently selected note on a treble staff. Click on the staff to “Lock” to a specific note. Use the arrows to the right to change the locked note by a semitone. Automatically unlocks after calibration.
3.  The note card. The background colour shows the calibration status of each fingering. Fingerings shown in yellow, orange, and red should be calibrated.
   a. This percentage represents the confidence with which the ClariMate recognizes this fingering. The higher the percentage, the faster the ClariMate will identify this fingering when you use it. Any fingerings shown with a percentage of 95 or below should be calibrated.
   b. In Free mode, this shows the fingering detected by the ClariMate. In Locked or Sequential mode, this shows the fingering selected for calibration.
   c. The note corresponding to the fingering shown.
   d. In Locked or Sequential modes, an arrow will appear here if the selected note has one or more alternate fingerings. Click or tap the arrow to select an alternate for calibration.
4. The instructions for note calibration. Checkmarks will appear as each step is completed.
   Place fingers: In Free mode, finger the note that you’d like to calibrate. In sequential mode, place your fingers according to the diagram shown.
   Blow♪: Blow a short puff of air. Calibration occurs when you stop blowing.
   Hold Still: Hold still while the calibration is taking place.
   Moving your fingers during calibration will result in a “Calibration failed” message. Loud noises during calibration will also result in a “Calibration failed” message.
5. Shows the calibration file currently in use. Tap the file name to open the calibration file manager, where you can create, delete, or rename calibration files.
6. Click or tap here to save your calibration and return to the home screen. The button will only appear after a change has been made.

Breath page

1. Choose how easy it should be to reach the ClariMate’s maximum volume. Do not blow while changing this setting.
2. Represents the player’s breath. The ClariMate makes sound when the needle exits the grey zone.
3. Use this panel to enable, disable, or calibrate the ClariMate’s Active Reed. See the Reed calibration section of the manual for more information.
4. Represents the reed movement. The ClariMate will play in tune when the needle is in the green zone.

1. Allows you to switch between three Pitch Bend modes: Clarinet, Standard, and MIDIMate.
   Clarinet: Emulates the pitch bend characteristics of a normal clarinet by limiting the maximum amount of pitch bend available on a per note basis.

   Playing: High performance MIDI for playing and recording.
   Notation: Designed for use with notation software, such as Sibelius, MuseScore, and Dorico. Uses a short 40ms delay to provide strict note filtering for cleaner and more efficient score creation.
3.  Transposes the MIDI notes. MIDI Transpose does not affect the transposition of the internal ClariMate sounds.
4.  Allows you to choose between a constant MIDI velocity (recommended) and a dynamic MIDI velocity. Choosing Constant will cause every note to be sent with a MIDI velocity of 80, while choosing Dynamic will send a different MIDI velocity based on the breath pressure level of each note.
5. Choose which MIDI channel the ClariMate app will use to send messages.
6. Choose which MIDI CC# will be linked with breath sensor data. CC#11 is recommended for MIDIMate and most other software. CC#2 is recommended for software designed specifically for electronic wind instruments.

The note that you are playing.
Velocity: The intensity, or dynamic of the note. For the ClariMate, this
defaults to a constant value of 80, as MIDI CC messages are typically a more useful way to control dynamics with a digital wind instrument. MIDIMate is programmed to “listen” for breath control data transmitted via CC#11. If you have configured the ClariMate to send breath control data via CC#2 or CC#7, then MIDIMate will not function correctly. Similarly, there are other software synthesizers designed for digital wind instruments that require breath data to be sent via CC#2 or CC#7. If your ClariMate is not working as expected with these programs, consult the manual for the application that you are trying to use with the ClariMate to find out what CC message that application is expecting to receive.

If your device does not power on immediately, please wait a few minutes and then try again. After about five minutes, your device should power on normally. If it does not, charge the battery using the included USB cable for a few hours, then try again. If it still does not turn on, follow the steps below:

1. Be sure that you have installed the most recent version of the ClariMate app for Windows or MacOS. The app can be downloaded from https://clarimate.us (АКШ/Канада)

2.  Turn the ClariMate on in Recovery Mode by doing the following:
   • Press and hold the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons
   • While holding down the buttons, press and release the Power button

This is likely a result of the calibration file that is loaded into the ClariMate.
Create a new Calibration file using the Calibration file manager and then calibrate any fingerings that are not shown with a green background on the Note page. See the Note page section of the manual for more information.

The Active Reeds are designed to be used with hard rubber mouthpieces and may not function correctly if your mouthpiece is made of a different material, like plastic. Issues with the Active Reeds may also be due to a manufacturing defect with the ClariMate’s carrying case. We regret to inform you that some ClariMates may have shipped with a faulty case that could have damaged the included reeds. If you are using a hard rubber mouthpiece and experiencing issues with your reeds, please contact us.

3.  Check the breath sensor meter in the Breath page of the application. If the meter is not moving, try the following:

Windows users will need to connect via their system’s Bluetooth menu when connecting their ClariMate to their computer for the 1st time.
If you still cannot connect, erase your ClariMate from your phone/tablet/computer’s list of previously paired Bluetooth devices.
Bluetooth Audio Routing:
If your Android device is connected to the ClariMate, but is playing audio from its speakers rather than the headphone jack of the ClariMate, then you will have to manually set the output of the audio to the ClariMate.

1. In the media player that appears when you swipe down from the top of the screen, tap on “this phone” in the top right corner.
   
2. Select the ClariMate as the output for the audio

On iOS, apps such as synthesizers or samplers may automatically route audio through the ClariMate. This will cause there to be a large delay, or latency in the sound, due to the Bluetooth connection. To fix this, route audio to your phone speakers or wired headphones by following these steps:

1. Enter the Control Center of your iOS device, and tap on the Airplay Icon (circled)
   
2. Select ClariMate from the list of connected devices.
